Why Go Back?
Working Remote and Loving It
It was March and I knew I was going to have to learn how to be a software architect from home.
Tons of questions came up?
What’s the best way to set up a home office?
How can I maintain the high-bandwidth communication with stakeholders that I’ve always done face to face?
How do I tell my family when I’m working and when I’m not?
How do I tell my brain when I’m working and when I’m not?
It is a familiar story. But for me the year wasn’t 2020, it was 2001.
In 2001 I started my freelance consultancy. I had looked at office space around where I lived, but it just seemed to make sense to work out of my home.
So I tried it… and I absolutely loved it.
I loved the 30-second commute
I loved being there to give my kids a hug when they got up in the morning
I loved drinking my own coffee rather than the sludge out of the industrial pot that had been sitting on the hot plate for 4 hours that couldn’t be helped even with half a cup of Coffee Mate powder
But more than that, I found out it worked. I was more productive. I could write code faster. I could deliver more creative and effective solutions.
My guess is that you have found out the same thing.
Maybe it was in March 2020, or maybe it was before that, when companies were experimenting with flex (now called ‘hybrid’) work.
And now you want to stay there.
The goal of this newsletter is to provide strategies for the post-pandemic remote IT job seeker. These strategies are not solely for finding a remote job, but for getting just the right remote job for you.
Here’s what you can expect:
Key questions to ask during the interview process
Techniques for standing out against a field of other candidates
Skills you may need to add, and how to add them quickly
And much, much more…
Remote work is not for everyone. But for those of us that have found remote work life more enjoyable, and more productive, than being at the office every day, why would we ever want to go back?
It’s been 20 years since that day in March 2001… and I’m still working remote and loving it.
